Array of windmills or wind turbines used for
generating electrical power. A wind farm at
Altamont Pass, California, USA, consists of
300 wind turbines, the smallest producing 60
kW and the largest 750 kW of electricity. To
produce 1,200 megawatts of electricity (an
output comparable with that of a nuclear
power station), a wind farm would need to
occupy around 370 sq km/140 sq mi. Denmark
has built the world's first offshore wind
farm, off Vindeby on Lolland Island in the
North Sea.
